How Does Stop Drilling Arrest Metal Crack Propagation?
I'm curious about the mechanics behind stop drilling cracks. How can drilling the crack tip help slow the propagation? Why does the crack not continue beyond the drill point? If the crack is caused by fatigue, do we need a pin to support the drill hole, or does the hole itself suffice to stop the propagation? This is a viable method listed in my student pilot handbook so I'm curious how I should evaluate the integrity of the structure if I come across a stop drilled crack. Should I be worried about progressive failure? Thanks for your time!
