When calculating the strength of threads, do you just do a simple tensile stress calculation on the thread shear area?

When calculating the strength of threads, do you just do a simple tensile stress calculation on the thread shear area?

Finding thread shear area of a bolt from here: http://ift.tt/2pSZiu7

, is it as simple as performing a stress calculation of load / thread shear area to determine a FOS?

I.e:

  • 10,000 lbf load

  • material UTS 800MPa

  • thread shear area XYZ

  • FOS = UTS/calculated stress

  • calculated stress = load / thread shear area

I've been looking up how to get a max load from thread shear area for a couple hours now but there's nothing that goes through it clearly, and all the calculators I have found seem to give different or weird results.
