Practice of Bestowing Names to Engines and Machines

I need to find out some information on the practice of bestowing human or familiar names to machines or engines as a safety measure. For example, instead of calling a generator in a power plant "2B" or "2C" should they be called something like "Hamlet" or "Chicago" because the human mind better remembers human or place names better than alpha-numerical characters? Is this documented in engineering literature? Anyone have any links / books recommendations that touch on this topic? Or what is your stance on this?
