Could a structural engineer just use equivalent stiffness/strength for a residential wall modification?

I'm a mechanical engineer in the chemical manufacturing sector, but I'm thinking about doing some modifications to my single story basic ranch house. I'm planning on adding some larger windows and doors to exterior walls. I'll have to get a PE stamped design but I want to understand the process as well. Wouldn't the easiest way for a structural engineer to assess the beam/reinforcement needed by evaluating the stiffness of a basic 2×4 18"OC wall and making sure whatever opening had equivalent stiffness in bending and buckling?
