Tips on working with thermocouples and improving Measurement reliability

In my department we run thermocouples roughly 44' throughout motorhomes and other vehicles from the measurement point to the data acquisition device. We constantly run into various problems with the connectors or small wear on the cables themselves over time. Another concern from the technicians is that the wire is difficult to work with and very brittle. I would assume this is just an inherent property of thermocouples being solid core wire. This leads me to wonder what type of connectors and extension wire do you use for your testing? Some background information our equipment is setup for k-type thermocouples, but open to all suggestions to improve thermocouple reliability and usability.
